FOOTBALL.
A gusty cold south-west wind and a cloud-covered sky were the cor.- v ditions under which the match, . *~' Foxton v. Moutoa, was played on Saturday, for the benefit of the local school jersey fund. Although the visitors were advised of the match at a late hour, it is gratifying to know that they made manful efforts to muster a team who came along to do justice to a worthy cause The Moutoa lads are to be congratulated on their worthy spirit of enthusiasm without which the mission of the enterprise would have been nullified. Moutoa, unable to muster a full team, Foxton men took the place of the absent ones. The teams were as follows : Moutoa :—Green (captain), Gregory', Cummerfield, Kauri, Wilson, Bowe, Newth, Ross, Burr, Rowley, Mahi, Taylor, Barber, Baker; Foxton: — Currie, H. Reid (captain), Procter, McGregor, S., McGregor H., Townshend, Walls, Reid, A. Huff, Carter, Andrews, Pine, Christie, Saville, and Fuller. From the kick-off the contest was spirited and keen. Favoured by the wind, throughout the first spell, Moutoa pressed hard on Foxton, being assisted in their efforts by Taylor’s excellent back work. Mahi and Baker both of whom are in A.l. form, made determined efforts to reach the goal line and came well nigh success on more than one occasion. From a line out, Barber, as full of dash as ever, after a brilliant piece of dribbling work was forced out within Foxton’s twentyfive. Foxton strove hard to relieve, the situation; but, Moutoa being awarded a free kick by a forward pass from Hiiff to Townshend, Taylor successfully converted the score. Moutoa 3, Foxton nil. In the second spell the tables were turned and Foxton immediately assumed the offensive. H. Reid again and again made noteworthy exertion to force a decision, but his opponents ever mindful of his speed and tactics, kept a watchful eye on his movements. From, a- loose scrum, C. Procter, who played a willing game throughout, passed to Huff who scored. A. Reid converted. Foxton 5, Moutoa 3. Shortly afterwards, the play continuing in Moutoa’s twenty-five, Baker saved a dangerous situation by a timely mark. Encouraged by the result of their former rashes, Foxton tried to augment the score by skilful passing within Moutoa’s twenty-five. Procter passed to Huff who sent the leather out to Townshend, who dived for the goal line but the übiouitous Barber foiled his attempt. Captain Green, who played a fine game, mustered his forces well, the whole performance by''' Moutoa being very creditable.
The primary school teams reagard the Senior teams in the light of an elder brother who is always ready to espouse the cause of the weak and struggling, therefore we have no hesitation in commending the worthy motives which prompted the local footballers to arrange a benefit match. This is the spirit which will make men big men and which will instil true “sports” wth magnoniinstil true “sports” with magnaniship. In the above match Mr Neville as usual, acted as a competent referee. PRIMARY SCHOOLS’ SEVEN ASIDE.
