MAINTENANCE OF MAIN ROADS.

LEGISLATION PROMISED

Replying to a deputation from Auckland suburban bodies with regard to damage done to roads by heavy commercial motor vehicles, Mr Massey said he did not think it was possible to raise all the money required for main roads maintenance at the present time. New Zealand’s credit was good in London, but if we sought to borrow millions for this purpose and were found not to be getting good value for the money our credit would drop to zero. Many county councils could do more than they were now doing. There would. be legislation limiting the weight of vehicles carried on certain roads, and an adjustment regard to revenue from license fees from commercial and motor vehicles.
