ASHBURTON’S PLIGHT.

THREATENED WITH DARKNESS. Ashburton, May 25. Ashburton is threatened with darkness owing to the shortage of coke at the power house. The Power Board purchased a plant from the Borough Council this week and discovered that the eokc stocks were depleted, which is unusual at this time of the year. There were only IS hags in stock, whereas 40 hags are required daily. Urgent appeals despatched to all quarters revealed that the shortage was general. A small consignment of coke left Dunedin this morning, but the position is critical.
