FOXTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
The monthly mealing of the above was held on Thursday night. Present: Messrs Horn blow (president), the Mayor (Mr John Chrystall), A. N Smith, Pearson, Christie, Osborne, Admore, Jno. Ross, E. Healey. M. E. Perreau and the secretary (Mr McMurray). POLICE STATION.
It was decided to write to Mr Linklater, M.P. and direct his attention to the fact that the Department had not yet taken any steps to carry out rebuilding arrangements at the police station and to urge him to speed up this work. HYDRO-ELECTRICITY.
The secretary was instructed to write fc Mr Alex. Ross, local member of the Horowhenua Power Board and the Engineer, to deliver addresses on the scheme and to fix a suitable date for same and that those interested in the various industries and the general public bn invited to attend the meeting. ADVERTISING FOXTON.
Mr A. N. Smith brought up the question of boosting Foxton and the local seaside bv issuing illustrated envelopes on similar lines to the scheme adopted by the Raglan Chamber of Commerce. Mr Smith s scheme met with the approval of the Chamber and the secretary was instructed to get a quotation for 50,000 envelopes for sale and distribution. CLOSING OF MAILS.
The president was authorised to confer with the local postmaster ie extending the time for closing the Foxton-Wellington mail from 8 pan. (o 7 a.m. and to ask whether a continuous telephone service could lie arranged with the fire station in order to save time in case of an outbreak of fire. PLUNKET SOCIETY.
A letter acknowledging a donation of two guineas from the Chamber was received from the local Plunkef Society.
11 was decided to write to the Borough Council and recommend that a rest room for women and a room for the society be included in I lie library building when it s erection is under consideration.
HALF HOLIDAY QUESTION. The Feibling Chamber wrote asking support for a proposal requesting the Government to enact a universal Saturday half-holiday, thus abolishing the local polls on the question.—The proposal did not meet with the approval of a majority of 1 he Chamber. NEW MEMBERS.
The following new members were elected: Messrs W. Adams, V. McDowell and G. Thorpe. BEACH ROAD.
Mr Perreau moved that the Manawatu County Council’s attention be drawn to the bad condition of the Beach Road. In speaking to the motion the mover said the roads in the Awahou riding were the worst in the'County. The president said that owing to the extraordinary work required to be done in this riding, Cr. Barber had an unenviable duty and his riding account was always in debit. So far as the Beach road was concerned the rates from the properties at the seaside was infinitisimal. The Mayor suggested that the County be asked to have a re-valu-ation made of the beach sections. This was added to the motion which was carried. The president congratulated the Mayor on his election and hoped lie would co-operate with the Chamber on any matter which the Chamber might bring before the Council. The Mayor, in thanking the president said some people wanted to kick him out of public life. He was prepared to retire into pi’ivate life but he objected to being kicked out and this had compelled him to contest the Mayoralty. He would be pleased to co-operate with the Chamber. Accounts were passed for payment and the meeting rose.
