COUNTY ROADS AND SHANNON BRIDGE.
RECOMMENDATION BY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
At Thursday night’s meeting of the Foxton Chamber of Commerce the president (Ah' Hornhlow) said the Chamber should lend its moral support to the Manawatu County Council in an endeavour to obtain Government assistance to deal with the Whirokino and Mouloa roads. The np-keep of these roads, owing to the vagaries of the river, was a source of great expenditure to the Manawatu County Council and the County Council would he justified in asking the Government to assist in making them a safe highway for Ira (Tic. Assistance was given by the. Government in connection with the Rimutakn and Paekakariki hills and Manawatu Gorge roads and the Horowhenua Comity Council had been granted a subsidy of £2 for £1 expended on the eoii.-truetion of concrete bridges to replace the wooden culverts on Iho main arterial road in their county. The Whirokino and Moutoa roads were works of an extraordinary nature and the County Council would he justified in asking for assistance. The Mayor: The Shannon bridge should he included. Ah- Hornhlow suggested that the Minister of Public Works he invited to visit the localities. He moved that this Chamber recommend to the Manawatu County Council that the Minister for Public Works he invited to visit the Whirokino and Moutoa roads and Shannon bridge and that I lie Horowhenua County Council, Foxton Borough Council and Chamber of Commerce and member for (he district he asked to co-operate with the Manawatu County Council if lhal body approves of the suggestion.
Tn seconding the motion, the Mayor endorsed the president s remarks and said that the Foxton Borough Council had not turned down any request for co-operation in connection with the Shannon bridge. The County Conneil's proposal was in respeet to the road deviation and slop bank. The bridge was in danger unless protective measures were taken to safeguard the structure. Air Osborne pointed out that since the roads were impassible for motor traffic, shipping via the port, which was of the utmost benefit to Foxton, had increased. As soon as the roads were put in order motor traffic would increase to the detriment of (lie port. The motion was carried unanimously.
