Sir, —In reply to “Old Identity,” who by the way is but an echo, and who now further admits his inability to keep pace with the rising generation. He replies that the reason they couldn’t use the facilities mentioned by me, was that they did not have them 50 years ago. Well, T am quite aware of that, and here is where I wanted to get him, because these things are the product and results of the genius and brains of Hie younger generation, but “Old Identity” should be consistent and instead of taking advantage of these tilings he should stick to his argument, and those relics of 50 years ago. He should sleep in his tent, take his drives in a bullock waggon, cast out all up-to-date sanitary arrangements, and get back to primeval state that suited him 50 years ago, instead of for everlasting blowing and bragging about what he did before the younger generation with new ideas, and scientific appliances lifted him out of that slough of despond, which has been the means of keeping Fox ton in the ruck and would still do so, were it not for the fact that the younger genera I ion arc no longer going to lie dictated to by these relics of 50 years ago. According to “Old Identity’s” ideas Main Street should still be a sand track and the creek therein should still have its wooden bridge, the streets should not be tarred' and the lights therein should he of oil there should be no water supply, no drainage, because he had them not in the dim and distant, past. He now has shifted his battle ground from his tent on the Bowling Green 50 years ago and’ the gold-fields of fiO years ago. If he keeps on he will be claiming to Lave built Tutankhamen’s tomb, but he omits to mention'that the diggers of ’O3 also dealt with him who stole another’s character! There’s lots of things they would not stand in ’O3. He also informs us that his glow worm refused duty on one occasion. Well, even a worm will turn, or was the worm inebriated? which may account for the fact that the biped was only wounded and escaped to the scrub that grew in the Bowling Green 50 years ago, and is still lingering on. His offer to put up £5 is peculiar, as in the issue of I he “Herald” of the 3rd appears the following: “'Old Identity’ Writes.” Then in your issue of the 12th he again writes under the nom de plume “Old Identity.” Now I don’t know but what lie may have sung it, or growled it, but Ido know that the Editor of the Herald would not publish a letter unless it was genuine, and had its endorsement over a nom-de-plume. “Old Identity” is cornered, and whipped and now wants to quibble. He is always quibbling, but the fact remains that “Old Identity” now wants to disown wlmt he writes in the issue of the 3rd. I leave the public to judge him as it is the public be tried to bluff with something he copied off (lie tombstone of old ideas buried 50 years ago. Take my advice “Old Identity,” get down to tin tacks, and things that matter, study evolution and fundamentals, it’s the future that matters not what someone had to do in the days of 50 years ago. Thanking you for your space, sir, E.G. MARTIN.
