FOXTON-CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY.
The quarterly meeting of shareholders of the Foxton Co-operative Cash Trading Society was held in the supper-room of the Town Hall on Tuesday" evening. A satisfactory number of "shareholders were present. Mr J. Newth (chairman of Committee pro. tern.) presided.
The business of the general meeting was to receive the balance-sheet and auditor’s import, and the consideration of general business. The balance-sheet was dealt with summarily, the Manager, Mr T. W. Winstanley explaining in detail the various important points connected therewith as he also did with the auditor’s report, after which the usual motion "Was put and.carried. Mr Winstanley took opportunity to explain to shareholders the outstanding requirements for the further progress of the Society’s business and tendered some sound advice on the conduct of the store on sound business lines.
General approval was expressed of the views put forward by Mr Winstanley, and it was evident that the Society now has a manager of wide business experience, and one who has had long and creditable service in the co-operative movement, but who tempers its ideals with practical and commonsense methods. A special general meeting was held at the conclusion of the quarterly meeting, the main business of which was to elect four committeemen, including President and secretary to the Committee. Messrs Cowley and E. Huntley were elected, unopposed, as President and Secretary respectively. The ballot for the other vacancies (five candidates) resulted in Messrs Hannah and Parkin being elected. The committee of management now consists, of Messrs Cowley (president), Huntley (secretary). .T. Newth, Parkin, Francis, Hannah, Rand, Madden and Aitcheson.
Consideration was given a proposal to alter the rules of the Society in order,-to broaden their scope which it was contended would enable the Society to be placed on a firmer financial basis, and hence provide better trading facilities. This proposal was accepted by the meeting which resolved that it be. a recommendation to the Committee to. revise the rules in the direction specified, which will then be submitted to the next general meeting for consideration.
A vote of thanks to the chair, and to Mr Winstanley for his inspiring address terminated the proceedings.
