Manawatu Herald TUESDAY, MAY, 8, 1923. LIBERTY BY SERVICE.
THOUGH we usually speak of human freedom as a thing to be either affirmed or denied, we have in fact, to win it for ourselves, says a writer in the Times. We possess freedom Iml only in a degree, and life’s business is to develop it to the fullest powers of perfect liberty. Liberty can never be an end in itself. It is to be desired as the mean's by which we attain life’s purpos*. What, then, is the highest purpose of life? It is to render to God and man the best service of which we are capable. Only in this freedom can we attain the fullest powers of our manhood which are to be desired, not that we may rest in them, but that we mav go out into the world to devote ourselves to the cause of true progress. Liberty is freedom of opportunity in service. Tt enables a man to give himself to truth, honour, righteousness, and fellowship, so that the whole community bound together in the bonds of mutual service, may enjoy a freedom of corporate strife without the fear of injustice or the strife of opposing ambitions.
