NEW EYE FOR OLD.
ANOTHER SURGICAL MIRACLE.
The damaged eyes of an eigh-teen-year-old youth who was blinded by a fireworks explosion have been replaced by portions of pig’s eyes. The operation was performed at Peterson, New Jersey, by Doctor Edward B. Morgan. During an operation lasting nearly fifty minutes parts of the eyeball of a six months’ old pig were grafted on the human eye, offer which four stitches were put in. The operation was performed after a local anaesthetic had been administered and the patient bore the ordeal well. Doctor Morgan used a cataract knife and removed the cornea selerotic, the crystalline lens, and the iris from the human eye. He grafted on similar tissues from the pig’s eye. With the exception of the animal’s crystalline lens, Dr. Morgan explained that the defect would be made up by the use of eyeglasses. He expected to be able to tell whether or not (lie operation had been a success in ten da vs’ time.
