A very successful Anzac service was held in the Monton Church last evening l , arranged by the Rev. W. H. Walton.
The Dorcas Society will he pleased to receive parcels of left-nff clO' thing which may he left at Mr A. X Smilh's shop.
The Herald staff desire to acknowledge wedding favours from Mr and Mrs J. O’Sullivan and to wish them long life, happiness and prosperity.
Now that McJ. Colder has made good with the formation of a hand, it is hoped that the township will show practical appreciation of his efforts by rendering financial assistance to the institution.
Upon enquiry to-day we are informed that Mr Hollings has so far recovered from his indisposition as to he able to get up, but it will he two or three days before he is able to attend to business. At the local State school on Tuesday afternoon, a special Anzac ceremony was carried out by the headmaster and brief speeches were made by the Mayor and the Rev. Mr Mini fie.
At the Anzac Service yesterday, the Mayor made complimentary references to the Citizens Silver Band which had made such splendid progress since its formation and had practised so assiduously to assist in the present service.
Up to noon to-day only about 10< electors had recorded their votes It is anticipated that there will be ; rush towards evening. The Mayo and one or two Councillors are a the entrance of the polling bootl and several cars are conveying vot ers to the poll.
The death took place at Auckland last Saturday, of the wife of Mr Geo. Whibley, after a lingering illness. Much sympathy will be extended by local friends to the bereaved husband and three lads left to mourn their loss. The funeral took place at Auckland on Monday. During the ceremony at the Soldiers Memorial yesterday afteuoon, the assemblage were startled by a loud report, the bursting of a motor bicycle tyre, the result of a collision between a motor bicycle and motor ear on the corner opposite the Soldiers Memorial. The cycle was ridden by two young men and as they were looking towards the ceremony, they did not notice a car approaching from an opposite direction. In an endeavour to swerve a collision resulted. One of the young men had his leg severely bruised and slight damage was done to the car and bicycle.
A sub-committee of the Palmerston Hospital Board consisting of Sir James Wilson (chairman), Dr Forest (medical superintendent) and Messrs Ilornblow, Monk and Vincent, accompanied by the Board secretary (Mr Fraser) visited the Otnki hospital and sanitorium on Tuesday. Matters of administration were investigated and the committee will report to the next meeting of the Board. The question of the Health Department’s suggestion to transfer the two snnitoria to the Hospital Boards’ was also diseased and reasons for objections raised.
