board it was remarked: “The cows will also, appreciate the silence of the motors in place of the present engines.” The comment prompted the speculation as to whether the prospective tranquility in the milking shed would in any way increase the butter-fat output, and also as to whether other occupants of the milking- shed would show an equally keen, appi'ecial ion of the silent system.” A curious custom dating from the beginning of last century, is observed at St. John’s vestry at Exeter. In the year 1810 a snuff-box was presented to the parishioners by the then Rector, the Rev. .J. Hill, who expressed a wish that the box should he handed round once a year at the annual vestry meeting. Consequently on the opening oi. the meeting, the box is, in accordance with the usual custom, handed around among those present. Excited female shrieks-on the Temuka railway station recently drew attention to the fact that a dog had jumped off the platform and was wandering underneath a carriage of the north-bound express just as the engine’s- departing whistle blew. The big crowd on the station waited -breathlessly to view the mangled remains as the train drew out, but they were denied their thrill of horror. The,,canine adventurer calmly waited between the rails as the carriages passed, overhead, and then wandered off the station with a bored air. *
