ANZAC DAY ARRANGEMENTS.
FURTHER MEETING OF LOCAL RETURNED SOLDIERS.
A meeting of local returned soldiers was held in the Town Hall meeting room last Thursday night to make final arrangement re Anzae Day and Poppy Day. There was a good attendance and Mr IV. G. Rutherfiml, secretary of the Relumed Soldiers’ Association, Palmer.-.) on North, occupied the chair. Mr Rutherfiml pointed out that the main object of the meeting was to endorse the suggestions made at a previous meeting r-e Anzae Day arrangements. He said that he had made arrangements for a firing party, uniforms, ammunition, etc. It’was decided that the action of the sub-committee at the previous meeting be upheld. It was decided to appoint Mr W. Trueman secretary of the local committee and a sub-committee consisting of the secretary and Messrs B. Walls, and H. Hamer be set up to make final arrangements. It was decided that the firing party only be in uniform, the remainder lo parade in mufti. Mr Trueman moved, seconded by Mr Hamer, that on no account will any collection lie taken up on Anzae Day.—Carried. POPPY" DAY. Air Rutherfiml once more explained how the money derived from Poppy Day was allocated and pointed out that no doles whatever were made last year. Poppy Day money had been collected and brought to Palmerston North where it was merged into a Central Fund, with which he, Mr Rutherfiml, had nothing to do. The Central Committee had allocated the funds and had paid France for the poppies received. This committee had also kept hack a certain sum in case any district outside Palmerston North needed money. No application had been made during the year from Foxton and Foxton’s quota was still there. Mr Trueman: Was there any notice given tn the effect that the money was available? Mr Rutherfiml: I had nothing to do with the money in the Central Committee fund. They did not advertise the fact. No committee had been set up to carry on locally after Anzae Day last year and so the money was left there. Mr Rntherfurd pointed out that the Poppy money that was spent, was only spent through local bodies. There was no Central Committee this year and there would be no trouble about the money. The total amount the Central Committee held was £7O; Foxton’s quota was £25, the amount collected locally last year.
Air Rutherfurrt said that through the order not being placed in time, there was a shortage of poppies this year. The districts, however, would nut he cut down. He would arrange to send 300 to Foxton. He was of the opinion that Poppy Day should he kept before the children and the distribution of poppies was the way to do that.
The question of a ladies’ committee being formed to deal with the distribution of poppies was dealt with and it was the unanimous decision of the meeting that Mrs T. W. Hunt be requested to take charge 1 of Poppy Day and that all returned men give all assistance pos--ible to making it « success. Mr s - Hudson was appointed treasurer :m, l Messrs McDowell. Hamer and Bryant a committee. A vole o| thanks to the chair concluded the meeting.
