The public is requested to wear Poppies on An/.ae Day. An article, dealing in humorous vein with the forthcoming elections, will appear in Tuesday’s issue. A special meeting of the Borough Council will he held at 7 p.m. on Monday.
The Mayor will address the electors in' the Town Hall on Monday night and review the work of the past two years. Mr -J. Gore notifies that he will not be responsible for debts incurred in bis name without his written consent.
• During the flush of the season the Marotiri district sends a fourhorse waggon load of cream daily to the Shannon Dairy factory.
Cr. Geo. Coley is the father of the present Council, having served the borough almost continuously for the past twenty years. Cr. Coley is also the biggest ratepayer.
A report of the fortnightly meeting of the Mann wain U.A.O.D. Lodge is crowded out of this issue, but will appear in our ntext.
At a meeting of the Junior Rootball grade held in Perreau’s rooms mi Thursday night, Mr F. William* was unanimously appointed eoaeh for that grade.
The season for taking and killing imported and native game opens 01" May Ist and closes on July 31st. Full particulars re taking out of: licenses, etc., may he obtained from Constable Owen.
At the local police court yesterday judgment was entered for plainlilt by default in the following easts: —Foxton Borough Council (Mr Bergiiv) v. A. J. Gibbs, claim £lO 19s od, "costs £3 (is; R. Palmer (Mr Bergin) v. J. Buick, claim £1 ns, costs I t,/-.
Two local sportsmen, Messrs N. Robinson and H. Hughes, returned on Wednesday last from two weeks’ deer stalking at Pirinoa in the W airarapa. They report deer to be very plentiful in that locality and their bag included several very tine heads.
W T e regret that Cr. Rand’s nomination announcement was inadvertently omitted from last issue. Cr. Rand has been a useful and conscientious Councillor during - the past term and should be accorded a continuance of confidence at the forthcoming poll.
At Thursday night’s meeting of the local returned soldiers, Mr W. G. Rutherford paid a high tribute to the interest evinced locally in Anzae Day. ITc said it was a day that should ever be kept before the public and it was very pleasing to see such an interest being taken in this matter.
\\’e are asked to remind all bandsmen willing to assist on Anzne Day that there will be a sectional practice outv in the practice room tomorrow afternoon at two o’clock. A sectional and combined practice on Monday evening. The sectional practice at 7 p.m., combined practice at 8 p.in.
A meeting of electors will be addressed in the Royal Theatre or Tuesday evening next by Cr. Martin ami other Council candidates The subject of Cr. Martin’s address will be: “Why a change in the Council is Required.” The ball has beer placed free of: charge for the meeting by the proprietors.
Cr. Martin informs us that lie infornls to deal with Municipal matter “with the gloves off” at Tuesday night’s meeting in the Royal Theatre and there will he no “beg pardons.” There will be addresses by other candidates. The meeting should create a good deal of local interest and attract a big audience.
The Shannon Co-operative Dairy Co. manufactured six tons of butter last month (March) and will pay out 1/7 for butter fat to suppliers for the month. The Company has just disposed of between 700 and 800 boxes of butter for export to Australia at 1/7/ per ]b. at- the factory door, which is equal to 1/9 per lb. butter fat.
The following is the record of attendances by the Mayor and Councillors at meetings of the Council during the past two years: The Mayor 47, Cr. Bryant 48, Cr. Coley 40, Cr. Band 4(1, Cr. Martin 45 (leave of absence granted), Cr. Smith 44, Cr. Thompson 43, Cr. Walker 40, Cr. Boss 37, Cr Whibley 37 (resigned). Total number of meetings held, 48.
At the adjourned meeting of local members of the Buxton hire Board on 'Thursday, the tender of Mr Macintosh for the construction of I lie lire engine was accepted. The acceptance of a tender had been held over from a previous meeting until the chairman had inspected and made enquiries re the Levin engine, which he reported upon favourably. A progress payment of £3OO was passed to the contractor for lire station construction.
