The Earl of Hopetoun has in his possession an old brass-bound lea-ther-covered ledger, which is prized very highly as an he'irioom. It is tlie book with which John Hope, the founder of the family, began business .in High Street, Edinburgh, more than 200 years ago; and that which makes the book so highly prized is the first entry, which is the following prayer: “O Lord, keep me and this buik honest.”
