SCHOOL COMMITTEE ELECTIONS.

HOUSEHOLDERS’ MEETING. - -Between twenty and thirty householders attended the annual meeting at the local school last night. As the nominations received were only sufficient to fill the vacancies an election was unnecessary. This, no doubt, was the - cause of the small attendance as compared with previous years. Mr Chrystall was voted to the chair. The annual report was read as follows: —

“During the year twelve meetings have been held and the attendance of committeemen has been very satisfactory—harmony - and co-op-eration predominated the meetings throughout. The school has settled down in its new environment and although all the conveniences are not yet provided, it is hoped that, in a few days, the Board will commence to equip the school with up-to-date conveniences. The steam radiator for heating the classrooms continues to give satisfaction and is a decided improvement on the grate system although not so economical. The covering-in of the dangerous stairway leading to the boiler-room has been completed, the Board providing the necessary material and the committee the labour. On the recommendation of the Committee seating accommodation for the children during lantern lectures has been provided by the Board. During tlies unimer months the supply of water for drinking purposes at the school was depleted and upon the Committee’s request, the Board supplied a force pump and accessories which provided an ample supply. The thanks of the Committee are due fo the Borough Council for remission of half the sanitation fees, to Mr A. Alsop, for his generous gill of cricket materials, to Mr E. Healev, for his presentation to the school of a “First Aid” apparatus; to the Headmaster and Staff for raising the sum of £24 Ifis to assist tin' Committee’s finances, to an anonymous donor for cheque which materially assisted the school General account and to Mr Geo. Coley for the gift of a flag staff. During the year a side-school at the Manawatu Heads has been established and since this has taken place the quarterly capitation has been increased by £6 10/-. Your Committee regret to report the death of the late Mr T. Henderson, who faithfully served the school both as committeeman and janitor. Mr W. R. Byne, who was appointed caretaker, has discharged his duties to the entire satisfaction of all concerned. During the year there been several changes on the teaching staff, The new headmaster, Mr Banks, has put in a strenuous year and has discharged his duties to the satisfaction of the Board, parents and Committee. The annual picnic and excursion to Ash- ■ hurst was a decided success and the outing was thoroughly enjoyed by parents and children alike. The Committee desires to congratulate the teaching staff upon the success of the school work during the year and for hearty co-operation with the Committee. The balance sheet showed a credit of £l4 18s 9d. "The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The nominations of the following were read and declared elected: — Messrs Hornblow, Geo. C. Coley, E. Cowly, Juo. Ross, C. Pearson, M. Perreau, R. Rangiheuea, A. Stevenson and P. Rimmer. Mr Chrystall in moving a vote of thanks to the committee and staff, referred to the good work accomplished during the year. He suggested that steps should be taken to provide a District High School. He did not think it was in the best interests of tlie children to .have o travel to Palmerston North for hgher education and the country children should have the same chances as those in the towns. Mr Hornblow said steps had been taken to provide secondary classes in the past, hut the number of children offering did not justify the change. The incoming committee would, however, look into this matter during- the corning year. AH Perreau advocated swimming baths and assistance at the Beach school.

it was decided to recommend these matters to the new committee. The usual votes of thanks were passed to the outgoing committee and stall; and a vote of thanks to the chairman closed the meeting. At a meetin’g of the new committee, Air Hornblow was unanimous- , ly elected chairman and Mr it. itangiheuea secretary, it was decided to-meet'the ■ first Monday in each month. Messrs Coley and Cowley were-appointed visitors for tile month and were authorised to attend to several matters in connection with repairs.
