MANAWATU-OROUA RIVER BOARD.

FLOOD PROTECTION WORKS.

At the last meeting of the Alana-vvatu-Oroun River Board, at which were present : Alessrs R. T. Bell (chairman), H. Wilton, H. Akers, M. F. Anderson, A. Seifert, IV. S. Carter, W. Smith, and N. P. Neilson, the newly-appointed engineer (AL- F. C. Hay) was in attendance and reported that the preliminary survey work in connection with the flood protection scheme would take sthree months to complete.

A letter was received from a Soatli Island engineering firm offering to carry out all excavations in connection with the hoard’s undertaking at a fixed price per cubic yard, the firm agreeing to provide its own machinery and labour. The price quoted was a most satisfactory one, and it was decided to communicate with the firm at a later date when the hoard has filially decided on some definite scheme.

RIVER BOARD AIEAIBERS INSPECT RIVER.

Members of the Alanawatu-Omua River Board, accompanied by ALHay (Board engineer) and Afr J. Linklater, ALP. (chairman of the Foxton Harbour Board) made an inspection of tbe upper reaches of ihe Alanawntu river from the jetty at the Heads to Aloutoa, to-day. Tintrip was made by launch. The object of the inspection was to afford members an opportunity of personally inspecting- the tortuous windings of the river and to point out the localities of the proposed cuts, which will be embodied in the engineer's plan for relieving thousands of acres of fertile land from inundation bv llood waters.

The proposed scheme, if carried out, will have a mo-t important bearing upon the local port and wharf.

Mr Hay. engineer to the Board, gave evidence before the Royal Commission dealing with the overflow waters of the Mnnawatu in 1907 and is familiar with the evidence and recommendations. His scheme will tie awaited with interest bv all concerned.
