MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.

The engineer reported upon the works in progress and works completed on the roads throughout, the County for the month of March as under at this week’s meeting: —Saildon Riding: Maintenance repairs have been effected along Kakariki road and some rough patches of metal clayed. An old wooden culvert on Bulls road has been taken out ; and replaced with pipes. This road was trimmed up with the grader in the early part of last month and was now being trimmed up again. Mount Stewart: Water tables have been cleaned out and weak places repaired along Lee’s road. The lorry is now delivering metal to repair the damage caused by the heavy motor traffic on Feilding-Awahuri road. A small pipe culvert has been laid across Sandon-Awahuri road and a portion of the water tables fascined. Kawa Kawa: Usual maintenance work has been carried out along Main Drain road. The widening of the sand cutting on Taikorea road has been completed and the sides fascined. Metal has been carted and weak places repaired along Taikorea and Couper’s roads. The grader has trimmed up Palmer-ston-Foxton road and also a portion of Foxton-Sandon road. Carnarvon: Lupins overhanging the lower end of River Bank road have been cut and cleaned back to I he edge of the road, and metal carted to fill in ruts on Puki Puki road. The contracts for forming and metalling the road in Fraser’s Estate is aboul completed and the road is now open for traffic, to the Rangitikei river. Awahou Riding: The contractor for constructing 21 chains of stop hank near the Shannon Bridge has commenced work. The bridge over the Main Drain on the Whirokino road requires re-decking and other repairs. Stone-Crusher: During the last month very little progress was made in fitting and renovating the engine at the crusher. At presen! and for several days past better work has been done and it is hoped to have the engine ready for work in a week or two. Tramway: The Himatangi curve has been re-gnag-ed, packed and the supercant reduced to 2}in. throughout the length of curve. A short length near Snndon has been lifted and packed to the original grade. A small concrete culvert is required under the line near the Ohakea siding. The present culvert consists of two concrete walls of inferior concrete which are breaking away and may collapse at any time. The cost oi the proposed culvert is £4B. The 4011). mils have been laid to Oroua Downs siding and as there arc no points and crossings available it will be necessary to remove the sleepers to the Himatangi end and commence plate-laying there and link up at Oroua Downs siding when the points and crossings are available. The report was adopted. It was decided to instal the culvert near Ohakea siding and to proceed with the work of repairng the bridge over the Main Drain on Whirokino road immediately.

The chief items of trallie on the Sanson tramway during the month were: Minerals and manures 18!) tons, cheese and butter 150$ tons, general merchandise 80 tons, sheep, etc., 61 trucks, timber 24,790 sup. feet, and the fares amounted to £1 2/6, stated the monthly report of the manager. The accounts for the tramways showed a debit balance of £39 8/1.
