Mr W. G. Rutherfurd, secretary of the Returned Soldiers’ Association was in town yesterday.

The brick work of the fire station will be completed to-day. The completion of the building should take only another fortnight. Mr J. A. Nash, M.P., was the only nomination received for the Foxton Harbour Board to represent the Borough of Palmerston North and he has been duly elected.

At the Dunedin Police Court yesterday, Albert Edward Blundell, a tram conductor, was committed for trial on a charge of bigamy, alleged to have, been committed on December 21 last.

Tlie Wanganui Education Board has accepted the tender of Mr T. W r . Hunt for the erection of new outoffices at the local school. The Board’s architect will visit Foxton shortly and will arrange to proceed with the work with as little delay as possible.

The Zealand flourmill at Southland, North Canterbury, was totally destroyed by fire last night. There was large stocks of grain and flour in the mill which was working full time. The insurances are not available, but it is anticipated the losses will be heavy.

A suggestion has been made to the Council by the Town Clerk, that the temporary Council Chambers, when vacated could, with a little improvement, he used in the meantime as a public reading-room and library. This suggestion is worthy of consideration by the incoming Council.

The Foxton public gave generous assistance of the Oroua Downs settlers to raise funds for the erection of their soldiers’ memorial Hall, it is hoped that our neighbours will recognise this spirit in future, by reciprocal treatment on behalf of local efforts and business houses.

Sir John and Lady Luke and Messi’s J. A. Nash and J. Linklater, M.’sP. assisted the Prime Minister yesterday in the ceremony of opening the peace memorial gates at the Weraroa Park, Levin. Mr Linklater, as member for the district, was one of the speakers, and delivered a brief, but very effective address.

Speaking in respect to the employment of unregistered plumbers in connection with water and drainage house connections at Monday night’s Council meeting, Cr. Coley said no mechanical skill was required to lay water connections, but skill and experience were required in dealing with sanitary connections.

As tlic nominations for the Wellington Harbour Board did not exceed the number required, Messrs J. G. Cobbe, of Feilding, and M. Cohen, of Palmerston North, have been elected to represent the Boroughs of Palmerston North, Bedding, Foxton, Levin, Shannon, and Otaki and the Oroua, Pohangina, Kairanga, Ilorowhenua, Manawatu and Kiwiten County Councils.

Wo desire to compliment; the Town Clerk (Mr Trueman) upon the comprehensive report lie submitted to (he Council at Monday night’s meeting and which is published in full elsewhere in this issue, which should be read with interest by citizens. The report not only deals with the administration work of the Council during its term of office, but suggests a policy which should meet with the approval of the incoming Council. The Council is fortunate in possessing such an efficient officer to administer its affairs and we deem it our duty to pay this tribute to his capable management and thorough grasp of civic requirements. A chronic cold poor Peever had, And in a most despondent mood He hied to town with anxious frown “In search of Something Good.” A churn exclaimed —“Cheer Up, Old Top!” “Your fears are quite absurd, be sure — Just try the nearest chemist’s shop Por Wood’s Great Peppermint Cure. 5

At the Police Court at Auckland yesterday Cornelius McDevitt was charged with a breach of the Gaming Act on March 17. The Foxton Silver Rand (registered) made its first public appearance last night and played a few selections in Main St., prior to proceeding to Oroua Downs. The standard of efficiency displayed in so short a time is a worthy tribute to the conductor, Mr J. Colder, who has stuck manfully to the task of forming the band against a good deal of opposition. Now that he has “delivered the goods,’’ it is hoped a generous public will render financial assistance to promote its welfare.
