AFTER THREE DAYS’ BATTLE WITH ELEMENTS. HEAVY SALVAGE BILL. Melbourne, April 4. The barque Garthsnaid, laden with nitrates from Iquique, struck a south-west gale at noon on Good Friday off Cape Howe. During the heavy roll the topmast backstay broke, and a few minutes later the main topmast mast yard came down. Oil was poured on the waters, the falling wreckage having destroyed the lifeboats. At midnight, the mainmast went overside. the steamer Zealandic was sighted towards the morning and took the barque in tow, and after three days’ struggle succeeded in salvaging her. The damage is estimated at £B,OOO and it is expected the salvage bill will amount to £15,000. The vessel* will probably be sold to defray expenses.
