LORD CARNARVON DEAD.
FAMOUS EGYPTOLOGIST GONE. CONSCIOUS TILL NEAR THE END. London, April 5. Lord Carnarvon died at 2.30 this morning. He was conscious till near the end. By curious chance, he casually asked the keeper of Egyptian antiques in the British Museum, to suggest a hobby for him, and when Egyptology was suggested. Lord Carnarvon devoted practically the whole time on asking questions.
George Edward Stanhope Molynoux Herbert, fifth Eai ; l of Carnarvon, Baron Porehester, High Steward of Newbury, was 56 years of age. He succeeded to the title in 1890. He was prominent as an Egyptologist, and latterly his name became well-known throughout the world on account of the finding by him and Mr Carter of Tutankhamen’s tomb in the Valley of the Tombs of the Kings. He was the -mwner of about .30,000 acres of land in England. Cable messages received from Cairo recently indicated that lie had contracted blood poisoning, which was followed by double pneumonia, hut no indication was given as to the cause of the hrst disease. The heir to the title is bis son. Lord Porehester.
