BOWLING.
The Palmerston Times says:— About 240 bowlers are expected in Palmerston North for the Manawatu Centre’s Easter tournament. The entries are only three short of last year’s total, which must be considered very satisfactory, considering that Wellington, Wairarapa, Wanganui and Mnstcrton are all holding Easter tournaments. Play will be commenced at 5.45 a.m. on Friday on the greens of the Palmerston North, Manawatu, Terrace End and Northern clubs. On Saturday evening at 8 o’clock, a smoke concert, to which all bowlers will be invited, is to be held in the Oddfellows’ Hall. Probably the tournament will be concluded on
Tuesday. The Dominion Association is calling for nominations for visiting rinks to journey to Australia at about the end of April. The trip is not to extend over more than six weeks.
On Saturday, April 7, Franks, of Masterton, will play Fastier, Palmerston North, for the Dixon Cup, on the latter club’s green. Jones (P.N.) has to date repulsed 15 attacks for the Manson and Barr Cup. On Saturday, Nye, of Foxton, will make the sixteenth attempt to carry it off. Manawatu Club has been particularly unfortunate lately in losing valuable players. Only recently Laurenson left Palmerston N. for Auckland, and now D. Fastier and Jack Braekcnridge are both leaving the town and consequently the club.
The finals of the Wilford Cup singles competition were decided yesterday and resulted in A. N. Smith being the holder of the Cup this vear.
Roore and Howe had a game to play in the qualifying round, which resulted as follows: —Roore 20, Howe 15.
This left Roore, Ross and Smith in the finals, and in the draw Smith secured a bye. Roore decided t<> forfeit to Ross, as it meant, in the event of him beating Ross, that lie would have to play three games in the afternoon. Ross therefore met Smith in the final game. Smith made two on the first head, and Ross singles on the second and third heads; on the fifth head honours were even. Smith scored on the eighth, ninth, tenth and eleventh head, gaining an advantage of eight points at this stage of the game, the scores being 4 —12. Ross added one on the twelfth head, but Smith got away on the next four, making the scores Smith 25, Ross 5. The game was abandoned at this stage. Smith was evidently in good form, but Ross was not playing near his usual game and it was expected that a good finish would be witnessed. Considerable interest has been shown in the competition throughout the season, and despite the uncertainties inherent in “good ol game” those that have reached the finals have fully earned their position, and the honour of becoming the holder of the trophy will be fulv conceded to the winner.
A tournament will be arranged on the local green on Easter Monday, when it is anticipated three or four visiting pairs will be present from Shannon Club.
