BEACH SCHOOL.

Our representative paid a visit in company with Mr Geo. Coley to the school at the local seaside or. Thursday. Upon reaching the river foreshore a westerly gale was shifting the sand in clouds, making things very unpleasant. The sand storm had driven every one indoors. The school is situated in the Beach Hall, off the foreshore and on the road to the sanitorium. The building faces east with the back to the weather quarter on a section of land set aside as a- reserve. Upon entering the building, the visitors were met by Miss Patton, who.was busily engaged teaching the scholars, 19 in number, which number included a few Foxton and Palmerston children: temporarily in attendance. The class was accommodated in the main hall, the walls of which, by the way, are not matchlined and over-crowding was out of the and as for fresh air, it was whistling through the hoards. To hold the class in this spacious room in winter, would be unthinkable, as the little ones would be “chilled to the marrow.” An an-te-room, match-lined and possessing a fire-place, will be used for the cold weather. The children have gathered quite a large quantity of drift-wood for the coming cold weather. Miss Patton showed the vimtors several garden plots which had been laid out by the children, but scientific treatment of the raw sand will have to be applied in order to make vegetation flourish. It is probable that a special grant from the Board will have to be obtained for (lie maintenance of the school as the local committee’s funds cannot help in this connection.
