FEBRUARY GRADING' RETURNS.
The following is the report of the grading returns for hemp, tow, end stripper-slips, for the month of February, 1923, issued -by the Department of Agriculture.— Hemp. —The total number of hales was 0,117, as compared with 7,542 for the corresponding period of last, year, a decrease of 1,425 hales.
For the twelve months ending 28 February, 1923, the number of bales graded was 06,234, as compared with 58,057 for the previous twelve months, an increase of 8,177 bales. Tow. —During the month 1,415 bales of tow was graded as compared with 1.544 for the same month last year, a decrease of 129 bales. For the twelve months ending 28 February, 1923, the number of bales graded was 10,872, as compared with 12,401 for the previous twelve months, an increase of 4,411 bales'. Stripper Slips.—During the month there were 7 bales of stripperslips graded as compared with 4 j bales for the same month last year, an increase 0f.3 bales. The following is the detailed particular's of the hemp graded :
Fifty-seven bales at Picton were graded line, sixty-three bales at Wellington, seven at Auckland and fourteen at Foxton were rejected. The following shows the number of bales in each grade, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis:— Fine 57 (38), good fair 1,427 (3,105), high fair 3,035 (3,190), low fair 733 (881), common 181 (258), rejected 84 (70), a total of 0,117 bales, being a decrease of 1,425 bales. Forty bales at Auckland reconditioned ex “Canadian Pioneer” not included. The number of bales graded at each port was as follows: \\ ellington 2,054, Auckland 1,705, Foxton 1,338, Bluff 318, Dunedin and Port Chalmers 100, Blenheim 81, Pie-ton 57, Wairoa 404. The following is the detailed particulars of the tow graded: —
Seven bales nt Wellington, nine tit Auckland, four at Foxtou and ten at Bluff were condemned. The following shows the number of bales in each grade, the'luunber for the corresponding period 1 of last year being given in parenthesis: Ist grade 452 (571), 2nd grade 83.1 (733), 3rd grade 102 (100), condemned 30 (34), a total of 1,415 bales, being a. decrease of 12!) bales. The number of bales graded at each port was as follows: Wellington 380, Auckland 503, l-’oxton 324, Bluff 85, Blenheim 9, Bioton 28, W'airoa 80. Stripper-Blips. —Seven bales at Auckland were graded 2nd grade. HIGH COMMISSION Eli’S REPORT. The High Commissioner’s cable, dated the 10th iust., reads: “Hemp, Manila market, linn early this week, closed easier. ‘G’ grade, MarchMay shipments sold at £3B ss; at £3O ss. Sellers now quote ‘J J grade, January-March and 1 eb-ruary-April shipments at £3O; output from Ist January to 24th February, 191,000 bales against 107,000 for the same time last year. New Zealand market continues quiet, small business in fair near at hand, at £3l 15s; moderate demand reported from America at about £32 to £33 according to position.”
