Manawatu Herald TUESDAY, MARCH 6, 1923. MOTOR TRAFFIC.
ROADS must be constructed to meet the evolution of vehicles used for locomotion and the transport of goods. Put it this way: roads are made for traffic and not traffic for the roads. Wjhntever may be said at County Council meetings of the damage done to roads by the everincreasing motor traffic, the fact must be faced that such traffic has com'e to stay whether roads are cut up or not and despite keen competition with the railways. Ts it not a . fact that settlers are being benefited by motor traffic directly and indirectly by way of cheaper freights to and from the centres? At Saturday’s meeting of the Farmers’ Union held at Palmerston, a recommendation to the branches to discuss the question of the unfair tax on farmers caused by the damage to roads through motor lorry and other heavy traffic was carried. Farmers in their opposition to motor traffic may find that they are advocating a policy of retrogression which may react to their ultimate loss. The policy of the railways is another question.
