CHARACTER IN HANDS.

Fingers are useful guides to character and ability. Begin by measuring the relative lengths of the fingers and palm. Measure on the back of the hand, from tip of second finger to its knuckle and from thence to the wrist. Fingers equal in length to the palm indicate good balance, and sound judgment and reliable critical faculties. If the fingers are longer than the palm, the subject is more intellectual and idealistic than practical; if the palm is longer, exactly the reverse. Fingers thick and bulgy at their bases (inside the hand) show the self-indulgent nature which greatly appreciates good food, comfort, and material pleasures. If there are considerable spaces between the bases of the fingers when held together the owner can rough it gaily. Long top joints to all the fingers show intuition, and are much commoner on women’s than men’s hands. Large joints and knuckles indicate a strong analytical and reasoning tendency; the owner of this hand will argue for love.of it, not to convince people. Smooth fingers without noticeable joints belong to the impulsive person, who often acts first and repents afterwards, whereas the knotty-fingered are cautious in ordinary matters, but always rise to an emergency and keep their heads. A double-jointed thumb with the tip well turned back always indicates adaptability and especially if the fingers are well spread apart, ability for acting. Strong characters have long, firm thumbs. A “waisted” thumb indicates tact, as does also a pointed little finger. A first finger nearly as long as the second shows marked teaching, governing, and organising ability, the born “top-dog” in-fact. If pointed, love of reading may be predicted. A noticeably long second finger gives a liking for solitude and a love of the country and animals. The third finger very long belongs to the person always ready to take risks and very lucky in chance and speculation. If the little finger turns in slightly towards the third at the tip there is medical or nursing ability.
