Guard A. R. Crowe is retiring from the railway service and intends to settle on the land. Mr Crowe’s many friends on the Fox-ton-Palmerston North section will wish him prosperity in his new - sphere of activity. Mr McDonnell, first assistant at the local State school, has received word of his transfer to a similar position at the Taihape District High School, and will take up his duties there at the end of next month.
After occupying the position of Mayor of Palmerston North for nearly 15 years, Air J. A. Nash, M.P., will not be a candidate for the Mayoralty this year. Mr Nash’s tenure of office constitutes a record for the borough of Palmerston N., if not for the Dominion. Messrs IT. Hamer, Wilson and A. Lockwood, of the local Fire Brigade, proceeded to Dunedin to-day to compete in the competitions to bo held there this week. <lf they are not successful in the competitions Ibe experience gained will be of much value to the local brigade. The friends of Mr and Mrs Tyer will regret to learn that their son, Gilbert, who has been ill for two or three- weeks with an internal complication, was operated on at the Palmerston North Hospital on Saturday but is progressing as satisfactorily as possible under the circumstances.
Mr L. R. Freeman, of Foxton, has been offered and has accepted the managership of one of Auckland’s leading hotels and will be leaving Foxton in the. course of a few weeks. Mr Freeman was for several years • licensee of Whyte’s Hotel, which he conducted with marked ability. Since he sold out, Mr Freeman was appointed secretary of the Foxton Racing Club, a position he has filled with a thoroughness that has won him high encomiums from the club, visiting owners and the public. He has also held the position of organising secretary for the Licensed Victuallers Association, in four electorates, viz., Manawatu, Palmerston North, Rangitikei and Oroua. Mr Freeman has also taken a keen interest in all public affairs and was for a time a member of the Borough Council. In social and musical circles Mrs Freeman will also he greatly missed as she has been a willing helper at all public entertainments and her vocal talents have been a great acquisition.
