NEWS AND NOTES.

It is reported from London that commitments under assisted housing schemes including slum clearances, amounted to £9,900,000 a year, of which £9,100,000 per annum is borne by the Exchequer. There is much activity in the Church of England in New Zealand in regard to missions at the present time, says the “Lyttelton Times,.” As many as eleven missionaries will leave within the next two months, including a doctor, several qualified nurses, teachers, and workers. The majority of these go from Christchurch to North and South China, India, Melanesia, and the Maori Mission. Wjhen the Stratford Primary School assembled after the vacation the headmaster asked the children how many of them during the holidays had heard their mother say, “Thank goodness, 1 shall be glad when you go back to school again." Nearly all present put up their hands, a fact which appears to indicate that parents recognise that school is the best place for the youngsters, says the “Stratford Post.” A Luxor correspondent states that the spectators were thrilled at the withdrawal into brilliant sunshine of a chariot from the tomb of Tutankhamen. The body is made of wood, covered inside and outside with embossed gold' and decorated with golden rosettes and bands. It is inlaid with semi-precious stones or coloured glass. The centre panel bears cartouches of Tutankhamen and round the inside front edge, projecting inwards, is an op-en-work frieze of wood with cutout figures, presumably representing Tutankhamen’s prisoners of war, apparently Asiatics. A minor part of the vehicle is decayed, but not beyond repair.
