Manawatu Herald THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 1923. WHAT'S IN A NAME?
I THE Palmerston North ('Vjjiin)»ei" of Conunerco has revived Use agitation for changing- Ihe name of Palmerston North. At a recent meeting- (lie following' reasons were given for (he change: ( L) That there is a Palmerston in (he South Island; (2) tlial I here was no! much use in Palmerston Xorlh as an advertising name as well-known Palmerston inslitnlio.ns were named Mamiwatu and Palmerston North was eliminated; letters and cables often went to Palmer-don South insted of Palmerston North; Palmerston North was named a.lter laird Palmerston who was lit lie known in New Zealand; that Palmerston North by some people wrrs thought to be a. suburb of Palmerston South. The Palmerston Chamber is. out for advertising purpose:-' and while if. may be commended for its enterprise if is certainly lacking in wisdom or n correct understanding of the feeling of the residents throughout the vast area which comprise-, the Manawaiu district who would most certainly oppose the monopoly of the name Manawaiu to designate the Palmerston borough. The proposal is too preposterous for serious consideration. “Marvellous Alunuwatu” will never spell “Palmerston North.” Might as well ask Napier to change its name to Hawke’s 'Bay, Masterton to Wairurapa, Levin to ITorowhenua, New Plymouth to Taranaki and so on.
