TENNIS NOTES.

PROPOSED NEW GROUNDS,

A general meeting of the Foxton Tennis Club was held in the Town Hall office on Tuesday night at 8 o’clock.

Members rolled up in force and the meeting was presided over by .r* the president (Mr R. McMurray). The chairman regretted to report that during the holidays their secretary, Mr Brophy, had been trans- i ferred to the Waikato and further advice had come to hand that the assistant secretary was about to he transferred to another district; both these officers had been very enthusiastic in the interests of the game and their removal would be a great loss to the club. The first business of the meeting was to fill the offices so vacated. Mr Fergie was elected secretary and Mr Jackson assistant secretary. The chairman then explained that a proposal had come from the Bowling and Croquet Clubs to combine with them in acquiring extra land adjacent to the Bowling Green, so as to have all these different games together on one playing arear. He reported that several members of the Tennis Club had had an informal meeting with the committee of the other clubs and had discussed the matter fairly fully and the general meeting held that night was the outcome. He hoped (hat members would heartily- support the project for with only two courts as at present the club would never make any progress, for even new tlie courts would not accommodate the number of players and this led to dissatisfaction and also kept many would-be players from taking up the game. Further, the game as played on grass was a very much bet ter game and made for more enen joy meat. Asphalt was too hot and hard to play on in the summer months and the wear and tear on balls and shoes made it a very expensive game. All championship tournaments were played on grass courts and to have grass courts would give those attending same a much better chance of bringing some of the championships to Foxton. The area of ground under consideration would allow of four tennis courts and one croquet green and to have the different games in one playing area would make these games boom.

The Bowling Club was most reasonable in their proposals re linking up and it was to the Tennis Club’s advantage to join up with them. The proposal was to hold a carnivdl or some similar moneyraising scheme at an early date and it was considered by such means there would not be any difficulty in raising sufficient money to free the present tennis courts and to acquire and lay down the new area. A general discussion then place after which Mr Bryant moved and Mr C. Simmons seconded that a committee of four with officers ex-officis, be set up to further confer with the Bowling Club and if satisfactory arrangements can be arrived at between the two clubs to agree to their proposal. This motion was carried unanimously. The following were appointed the committee : Messrs Dr. Wyllie, Bryant, and McDonnell.

In the absence of two of the match committee Messrs Bryant and McDonnell were appointed to act with Mr Jackson re match with Otaki and Shannon.

Meeting of match Committee. —A letter was received from the Otaki Club suggesting Saturday, the 10th inst. as a suitable date for the Country Cup match and stating they were willing to travel to Levin for the purpose. It was decided to agree and the following team was chosen: Ladies —Mrs and Miss McMurray, Mrs Moore and Miss Beard; Men: Messrs Bryant, Procter, Fergie, N. Ross, Jackson, and McDonnell.

A letter was also received from the Wellington Provincial Tennis Association asking whether Foxton Club would be willing to play the Cup game in which Shannon detaulted to Foxton. It was decided to advise the Association that Foxwas willing to play the match when suitable arrangements could be made to do so.
