CONFLAGRATION.
FIVE-ROOMED HOUSE DESTROYED. At about 10 o’clock on Saturday night a flare was noticed in the direction of the cemetery, which proved to be the five-roomed residence of Mr F. Harris, in Howan Street, on the eastern outskirts of the borcugh. The syren was sounded but by the time assistance arrived the house and contents wer’e practicaV ly razed. Mr Harris informs us that he left, the house at about 7.30 p.m. when everything was apparently safe. A fire had been burning in the stove at tea time, but was apparently extinguished before leaving. There was no one in the dwelling at the time of the outbreak and everything the family possessed, except the doilies they were wearing, was destroyed. The property was used as a poultry farm and the poultry houses were saved. Mr Harris cannot assign a reason for the outbreak.
The house was insured for £SOO and the .contents for £l5O in the New Zealand office and Mr Harris’ loss will be greatly in excess of this amount.
