THOUSAND MILE MOTOR TRIP.

The Rev. Frank McDonald, local Presbyterian minister, accompanied by Mr Hedley Wilton, of Rangiotu, returned from a thousand mile motor trip up north this week. They took camp equipment with then and despite occasional rain, spent a most enjoyable time. The roads on the whole were fairly good. The route traversed was New Plymouth, over Mount Messenger to Awakino, 'thence to Te Kuiti, Hamilton, Paeroa, Waihi, Tauranga, Te Puke, Mata ta, through the Rangitieki swamp at Te Teko, thence to Rotorua, through the Waiotapu valley to Taupo and on to Napier and home. The journey took eighteen days. Mr McDonald informs us that a valley road is being metalled which will obviate Taumataumaire hill en route to Te Kuiti. Mount Messenger is also being metalled and will be completed by March. Wjhen this is completed, metal roads will then bo open for traffic throughout. The tourists arrived at Napier during the flood and they state that between Napier and Waipukurau the countryside had the appearance of an “inland sea.” The journey was accomplished in a Ford car.
