FLOODS IN THE SOUTH.
HEAVY RAIN IN MANY PLACES.
HARVESTING OPERATIONS DELAYED.
Christchurch, January 29. The rain has been very heavy throughout, Banks Peninsula. Floods are reported in various places and have washed bridges out to sea. Over five inches of rain was recorded at Akaroa in 24 hours. A very severe thunderstorm visited some of the country districts yesterday afternoon. The wheat crops are now ready to cut and harvesting operations have already been delayed in many districts. Discolouration of grain has occurred in many districts where the rain has been heaviest, but the farmers generally are hopeful that the damage will be limited to what has so far been done. A lot of oats has already sprouted, and it is certain that, the supply of bright oaten chaff will he affected. RAILWAY LINE BLOCKED. Dunedin, January 29. Large masses of earth fell on the railway line between Clyde and Cromwell, completely blocking the traffic for a mile and a half. It will probably be two days before the line is clear. Cromwell advises that heavy rain yesterday caused several washouts and slips on the railway between Cromwell and Clyde. The train is unable lo get through to-day and the roads are also impassable.
