THE SHIPPING TROUBLE.

UNIONISTS Y. FREE LABOUR. AN IRON BAR ARGUMENT. Christchurch, Yesterday. Early on Saturday evening, an affray occurred on the ferry steamer Wo bine, as a result of which a fireman is under arrest on a charge of alleged assault, and two other unionists find themselves ashore without a ship. The trouble occurred in the quarters of the stokehold crew. There were three union firemen in the Wahnie, the remainder being non-un-ionists. As the result of an altercation, the man under arrest is alleged to have struck a non-unionist over the head with an iron‘bar. The ether free labourers at once, it is alleged, adopted a menacing attitude toward the unionist and the. intervention of the officers was necessary. Captain Cameron then ordered the three union men ashore and one was placed under arrest. The others are to be paid off to-morrow. PREj\HER’S PROMISE FULFILLED. Wellington, Last Night. The Hon. C. J. Anderson, Minister for Marine, made the following statement to-night: “My attention has, been called to a statement made by Mr Clarke, secretary of the Dunedin branch of the Seamen s Union to the effect that Mr Massey had promised to reinstate the suspended requirements of the Shipping and Seamen’s Act and hah failed to redeem his promise. This statement in contrary to fact. The provisions were reinstated at the conclusion of the recent shipping trouble. In reply to a communication received on Saturday I informed the Crown Law Office and had been advised that men employed on ships could not be discharged unless they desired it and until the vessels returned to their home ports and the articles under which the men had been engaged were completed.” ~
