TIIE PORT’S SHIPPING IN- THE SEVENTIES. '

We reproduce the following account and shipping returns of the local port sor the years 1877-8-9,. from the file of the Herald of January 6, 1880 : “MANAWATU SHIPPING TRADE.

“Mr Burgess, Collector of Customs, has kindly handed us a relurn showing various facts of interest, regarding the trade at the port of Foxton. From it our readers will see' that a steady improvement has taken place in the trade, more especially in the class of vessels arriving here. The following are the figures: — Year No. of Vessels. Tonnage. 1877 160 9,030 1878 130 9167 1879 . 167 13202 “Though the progress indicated is not very great, the tonnage show*, an improvement last year of over 4,000 tons, which is a gratifying proof of the expansion of the local Irade. It is absolutely certain that during the year upon which we have •just entered, a great improvement will take place in the export timber Irade. Either that or a terrible depression is staring the sawmillers of the district in the face, for local consumption cannot possibly keep twenty mills going in the district. Should a greater trade spring up with the South than that which at present exists, we may reasonably expect 1880 to witness a great improvement in the shipping trade of this port.”
