ENGAGEMENT OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED. TO.DAUGHTER OF EARL OF STRATHMORE. London, January 15. The engagement of the Duke of York to Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Ly-on, daughter of I he Earl of Strathmore, is officially announced. Prince Albert, Duke of York, second son of King George V. and Queen Mary, was born on 14lh December, 1895, at York Collage, Sandringham. lie. was trained for (lie Royal Navy at Osborne and Dartmouth, and was in due course appointed to the Collingwood in 1913. He visited the East Indies in (lie Cumberland in the spring of 1913. Appendicitis caused him to leave his ship for a while during the war, but lie was present at the Battle of Jutland. On his twenty-first hirlhday, in 1916, he received the order of K.G., and was created Duke of York, Earl of Inverness, and Baron Killarney on -IfI: June. 1920. Prince Albert went in for flviag in 1918, and was promoted to commander in the Royal Navy in January, 1921. Lady Elizabeth Angela "Marguerite Bowes-Lyon is the seventh child of the fourteenth Earl of .Strathmore and was horn in 1900. The family is a ppminent one amongst the British nobility, and dates hack to 1445, when the first Lord Glamis was Patrick Lyon, a Scottish feudal chief, who had been made Master of the Household. The widow of the fifth Lord was burnt as a witch at Edinburgh in 1537, being accused of designs on the life of James V. of Scotland. Her son was also condemned to he executed, hut was imprisoned until he reached his majority. The accusers confessed to the falsity of the charges and the youth was restored to his title and possessions. The title was raised to the digait v of an earldom in 1677.
