THE HEMP MARKET.
DECEMBER GRADING RETURNS. The grading returns for the month of December for hemp, tow, and stripper slips, have been issued by the Department of Agriculture, as follows: — Hemp. —The total number of bales graded was 5,262 as compared with 7,193 for t'he corresponding month of last year, a decrease of 1,931 bales. For the twelve months ending 3.lst December. 1922, the number of bales graded was 60.-18 1 as compared with 60,14.1 lor the previous twelve months, an increase of 44 bales.
Tow. —During the nmulli 1,260 bales of tow were graded as compared with 1,832 for the same month last year, a decrease of 572 bales. For the twelve mouths ending 31st December. 1922, the number of bales graded was 15,225 as compared with 12,697 for the previous twelve months, an increase of 2.528 bales.
Stripper Slips.—During the month there were 22 bales of stripper slips graded as contpaed with 72 hales for the corresponding month last year. For the twelve monthendiing 31st December. 1922. the number of bales graded was 72. acompared with 1,575 for the previous. twelve months. a decrease of 1.503 bales.
The following is the detailed particulars of the hemp graded: —
One bale at Auckland. 57 at Fox ton and 28 at Wellington were rejected. The following show.- the number of bales in each,grade, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis: — Good fair 1.114 (1.617). high fair 5,347 (4,154). low fair 652 (1,067), common 63 (134). rejected 86 (163), a total of 5.262 bales, being a decrease of 1.931 bales. The number of bales graded at each port was as follow- :—Auckland 1,394, Foxton L. 320. Foxton 1,785, Blenheim 105, Blutf 312, Dunedin 87, ILunaliapa 13!). Pi. Chalmers 120.

Twelve hales at Auckland. 5 at Foxton and 8 at Wellington condemned. The following' -how- the number of hales in each grade, tin* number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis : Ist grade 585 (840 i. 2nd grade 579 (775). 3rd grade 75 i 129 t. condemned 25 (88), a total of 1.260 bales, being a decrease of 572. The number of bales graded at each port were:—Auckland 380, Foxton 250. Wellington- 1-82. Bleulieim 58, Blnif L.IO.
Stripper Slip-.—Sixteen bale- nr Afiekland and ~ix at Foxton were graded 2nd grade.
