WATER AND DRAINAGE.
ENGINEER’S REPORT
At last night’s Borough Council meeting the water aud drainage engineer (Mr Cliuaie) reported a.s fot lows on the work carried out during the past month: — “Tomorrow it is proposed to start laying the outfall sewer from the septic tank to the river. Tims will be the most difficult portion of the whole of the sewerage works, but as Mr Reid lias had experience m exactly similar work we expect tins work to be completed within a week or ten-days’ time. There are several manholes that require finishing oft and the work of clearing some of the first laid sewers o£ sand will be done at the same time. It will be necessary for the Council to decide wlmt the programme of work to . complete the sewers is to be. “Since the holidays about a dozen men have been employed laving the four inch water pipes. This work will be discontinued until the sower outfall lias been laid, and it will be necessary for the Council to decide when the laying of the pipes is to be restarted. the. past two months Mr Neville has been keeping a record of the How from the wells, as has likewise the writer. We have now come to the decision that the only successful way to overcome the shortage is to build a storage reservoir as til’st proposed in our original report. However, we think that the reservoir can be modified somewhat so that the cost can be brought down to about £SOO. “We have not yet had time to go thoroughly into the matter, but suggest that we furnish a plan and estimato at a later date. “The pump in use lias been designed to operate only as long as the suction pipe is full, and the flow from the four wells cannot do this. “Although the wells certainly have decreased in flow, they are now averaging about sixty gallons per minute each, and we think that they will supply ample for the requirements of this town for many years, providing a storage tank with a capacity of say sixty thousand gallons is built. The report was adopted, the water and drainage committee to confer with the engineer re construction of collecting tank to hold approximately (30,000 gallons and that the laying of' water pipes be continued but that the laying of further sewers be deferred until all the water supply scheme has been completed.
