THE SAYINGS OF MRS SOLOMON.

Behold my daughter, 1 charge thee, be wary in thy choice. Boxmany shall call, but lew propose. Verily, a woman need know but one man, in order to understand all men; whereas a man may know all women and understand not one of them.

Verily, verily, there is this difference only in husbands: that the first maketli thee weep; the second mqketh thee wonder; but the third maketh thee weary.

I charge thee, my daughter, when love beginneth, question not any man how it will end; for it is only in the beginning of things that a man is interested; even in the cream from off the jug, the bubble of the champagne, the meat on the peach, and — the first kiss of a woman. Hast thou scorned a man’s kiss? Then will he exalt thee, saying, “Lo she is very proper.” For he can think of no other reason why thou shouldest not desire to kiss him.

Give ear, my daughter, and receive my wisdom. I charge thee, seek not to be a fashion plate, for a human “shriek” giveth warning and frighteneth the game. Verily a becoming frock of home manufacture is more to be desired than a French creation which maketli thee to resemble a bad dream. Costly thy smile as thy dentist shall make it; for a pearl in the mouth exeeedeth two on the finger. And it is better to be dead than unkissed.— From “The Sayings of Mrs Solomon,” bv Helen Rowland.
