PLOT TO DEFRAUD BANKS
CHEQUES FORGED FOR £3.000. Masterton, Last Night. Leonard Walter Makin, who was a crested for forgery, has been remanded to Wellington on December 20. Accused opened an account at Palmerston North for £24, with instructions that it be operated on ;it Carterton. He visited Carterton this morning and drew a cheque for £2O which was honoured. He then presented a cheque for £660 drawn on the Discharged Soldiers’ Settlement Loan account, but was refused, as the manager bad been warned that Mnkin had asked for ail advance of £2OO to buy a ear but had been refused. so he loft the bank. The manager followed him to the railway -tation. Both boarded the express and on their arrival at Masterton the bank manager pointed Makin out to a constable, who arrested him.
