Manawatu Herald SATURDAY, DECEMBER 23, 1922. A BIG SCHEME.
MEMBERS <>l' (lie Mann watu-Oroua Drainage Board, wlut waited upon tin*. Eoxton Harbour Board at Thursday's meeting. discussed tlie proposed cut to relieve the Hood waters of tHe Miamiwatu in the lower readies. The proposal is to put a cut in at Walden’s corner to come put near Xye’s mill and thence through the Matnkarapa swamp to the fisherman's Bend. This cut was the alternative recommendation to the more expensive Himatangi cut a - recommended by the Commission >l.lllO venrs airo.. In order to eminlerael the extensive banking scheme or, one side of the river, something will have to be done to save the unprotected lands from serious inundation in time of Hood. The proposed minor out will, in the opinion of experts, solve the difficulty. A point which affects the Harbour Board, apart from co-operation in other directions, is: W.il! the proposed cut render the present wharf useless for shipping by reason of lessening the depth of water in the old channel? The opinion is gaining ground that sooner or later the present wharf will have to give place to one at the heads with a connecting light line of railway to the town. The whole position will iiipiirc to lie carefully considered by the Harbour Board when the Drainage Board’s scheme is submitted at a later date.
