OUR BAND.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —And now we are to. hnvS two bands amongst us. A ‘‘Silver Band” for the citizens and a “brass Band” for the citizens. A silver band is a step towards progress and success, but a brass one, certainly stagnation. I understand that both are public bands, and both have petitioned the Council for assistance. Now, to get right down to bed-rock. The Silver Band is a. “registered body” organised by a practical bandsman —Mr Colder. The Brass Band- is an “unregistered body” organised by one *of doubtful band experience—and it, is between those two organisers where the whole crux of the present trouble lies, and not between rival conductors as a Councillor points out, though I would not doubt that there may be a few dissenting grizzlers which any properly organised society is better rid of. The Council or citizens must not be hood-winked as to which band they are in duty bound to support. The “registered” band or the “unregistered’' band, and I would suggest a public debate on the band question between these two rival organisers would be interesting and of value. I venture to predict that, if this were so, the Town Hall would be packed, a charge could be made and the large proceeds placed to the funds of the winning debater’s band. So far as the citizens know, it is safe to say that there are only two citizens actually interested in the citizens “Brass” band and the balance of the citizens are interested In the advent of the Box ton “Silver” band; and it strikes me — ■ well so far as these two band organisers are concerned, one has proved himself well-fitted to the work and the other is fitted like ,a round ping in a square hole. I am, etc., - - citizen:
