CLERK OF COURT’S FALL.
Hamilton, Last Night. In the Supreme Court Henry Thomas Smith, late constable and clerk of the court at. Kawhia, was charged with having committed twelve thefts, nine of them being in respect of moneys paid into court and three others in regard to the alleged disappearance of various articles from the Kawhia wharf. Smith was indicted before a jury of twelve to answer two of the charges, the other eases to be taken later in batches of two or three. Evidence was given that the money paid to the accused was not acknowledged. After a retirement of half an hour, the jury returned a verdict of guilty, with a strong recommendation to mercy on account of the laxity of the audit and the stigma cast on the prisoner’s family. Sentence was deferred.
