GUARANTEES FROM SEAMEN.
NOT YET FORTHCOMING. VESSELS RUNNING WITH FREE LABOUR. MEN TO BE PROSECUTED. Wellington, Last Night. There is no change in the actual position in connection with the seamens dispute, and vessels working under free labour were still running without any ti’ouble. “Everything is satisfactory,” was the reply given to a reporter by officials while the usual silence greeted an inquiry from Mr W. T. Young, secretary of the Seamen’s Federation. The Dominion executive of the Seamen’s Federation is in conference .in Wellington at the present time, and is understood to be considering the dispute and what steps will be taken in the immediate future, following on the demand of the emplo.yers for guarantees that |he award will be observed in the event of the services of union seamen being accepted. An important .incidental development is the decision of the Labour Department to institute proceedings against the seamen for having allegedly taken part in an unlawful strike, contrary to provisions of section 5 of the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act. Summonses are being issued against individual seamen and firemen throughout the Dominion and the Wellington cases have been set down for hearing on December sth.
