SHIPPING SITUATION.
REQUEST TO LIFT SUSPENSION OF ACT. Wellington, Last Night. There is no change in the shipping situation, and no sign of a settlement as the-Union has not come forward.with the guarantees asked by the owners. Mr Young; the .Union secretary,.declined to state whether any steps had been taken to call a meeting of the National Executive regarding a guarantee. Regarding the Sydney messages that the Union version of the New Zealand position differed from that given in press messages, it was ascertained that the Union’s inesage did not emanate from Wellington. •''* The crew of the Holmdale gave notice yesterday, but her departure with a non-unionist crew is expected this evening. Yesterday, telegrams were despatched to the Prime Minister by the Federated Cooks and Stewards’ fJnion, the Merchant Service .Guild, and the Marine Engineers’ Institute asking that the suspension of the Shipping Act should be removed. To-day, the cooks and stewards received a reply from Mr Massey, stating: “I will consult my colleagues but the Government must be satisfied that this strike is at an end before the suspension of the Act is removed.” It is now reported that dissatisfaction is felt by members of the Merchant Service Guild and the marine engineers regarding the dispatch of ‘a telegram to Mr Massey, asking for a removal of the sus-
pension of the Shipping Act, and meetings of protest are being held against . the sending of the message.
