The centenary celebrations for Juan Sebastian del Cano, the first navigator to circle the globe, began in the Miramar Palace at San Sebastan, his birthplace, a few weeks ago, the 409th anniversary of his return to port. Representatives of' Britain, Fsance, Japan, Peru, Denmark, Holland, Italy, Argentina, Uruguay, and Portugal attended. Delegates from scientific* bodies iu Paris, London, Madrid, and Berlin were also present. King Alfonso made a speech of welcome to those who had gathered there.
