SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The monthly meeting of the School Committee was held last night. Present: Messrs Hornhlow (chairman), Geo. Coley, Cowley, Jno. Ross, Pearson, Perreau, Stevenson, Roore (secretary) and the head teacher, Mr Banks. Correspondence was read and received from Mr Leigh Hunt asking for a testimonial for roofing slates on the school. —Referred to the Board’s architect. From the Board, staling that the side-school at the Beach would he opened on October 14th in charge of Miss Purnell and that capitation allowance would he paid in accordance with the regulations.—A further letter was received from the Board stating that tho side-school was over (he three mile limit, hut that the Minister had waived the regulation.—Decided to take no further action in the matter at present. The Board wrote objecting to the erection of doors in the corridor proposed to be erected at the committee’s expense.—The chairman said certain parents had objected to their children being subjected to a draught in the corridor, used as a class-room. The Board had sanctioned doors in other parts of the corridor. The idea of ihe wide corridor was that it could he used for such purpose, as ii took the place of an assembly room. —The headmaster said that lie did not now use the corridor on windy days. He was in communication with the Board on the subject.—Held over I ill .next meeting. It was decided to confirm the appointment of Mi,ss Fahey as issistnnt in succession to Miss McCormick. The head teacher reported that Ihe average attendance for (he period ending November fitli., was 425, out of a roll number of 442. (several minor repairs were specified. A donation of Co was received from a local resident who had heard that tin* committee were short of funds. Tf was resolved to thank Ihe donor and apply for a subsidy on the amount. Decided fo endorse a resolution pnssed by the teachers conference urging that no reduction he made to Ihe educational grant. Messrs Stevenson and Ross were appointed visitors for the month.
