TO INDUCE SHIPPING, PALMKRKTON CIIAMI3ER ACTIVE. As a result of the visit to Eoxton and Palmcrs'ton North of Captain Mutiro and Mr Mil ward, representatives of the Canterbury Steam Navigation Company, the improvement scheme for the port is being advanced another step. At yesterday'- meeting ot the Palmerston Chamber of Commerce, the chairman (Mr H. L. Young) said that these gentlemen had called upon him regarding their company's proposal to run a service from Lyttelton. Captain Munro had .-aid. after inspecting the liar, lhai I here was only a sufficient depth of water to admit 250-ton vessels. Mr .). Linklnter, chairman of the Harbour Board, and the speaker had conferred, and had agreed that the best thing to do was to get the bar deepened and shift the wharf about a mile inside (he heads. If a rate could he struck it would he possible to make n practicable bar and secure an 800-ton service. The best method would be to go ahead with the large scheme, and get an expert’s report, after which a public meeting would be called to go further into the* matter. This scheme would really make Eoxton a port, while al the present rale nothing could he done. Mr Fustier considered the scheme outlined by Air Young was undoubtedly the one to adopt. Few people had any idea of the amount of good- that had to he carried to and from Palmerston North. He thought the -rheme would he the making of the district and would mean a lai'gc -aving in the cost of transport. Mr Young stated that the attitude of the Canterbury Steam Navigation Co. was that if Eoxton were made a navigable port it would run the boa Is. The service would he from Dunedin, Timarn, Oatnaru and l.vtielton lo Eoxton.
