“ Because I Fought for Liberty.”

Why am I opposed to Prohibition? Because I fought and suffered for Liberty. And in that struggle alcohol greatly assisted not only those who so valiantly faced oold and hunger to obtain the final victory, but also comforted tlie last moments of millions of others who made the supreme sacrifice in the great cause of Liberty. Is the sacrifice of all those heroes to be unavailing?

Because God in the beginning raised ns above the lower animals by endowing us with the gift of free will; the power to distinguish right from wrong, to discriminate between use and abuser Shall we lightly cast away this divine birthright by voting Prohibition? Because I consider that the removal of all temptation is the surest way to sap the moral fibre and weaken the powers of resistance. Just as the Moa lost its power of flight and fell an easy prey to its enemies by not making use of its wings, so we lose our ability to fight against evil iby having all temptation removed from us. It is not God’s plan for building up character. He. has placed us in the midst of evil, and His promise is not to those that that run away, but to “those that overcome.” Is the wisdom of the Prohibitionists greater than that of the All Wise?

Does the present appalling state of chaos and lawlessness in Russia and America —-the only two nations that have so far adopted Prohibition —impress anyone with the idea that Prohibition is all-powerful to usher in the Millennium ?

And lastly, because I use the reasoning powers which. God has given me to fib ink for myself instead of being led by such men as the pussyfoot agitators. Such orators can only be compared to the professional agitators who

engineer industrial unrest and fatten on the weakness of those who fall under their influence, I have the highest regard for temperance in all things, but the greatest aversion to tOrat most intemperate of all intemperance—Prohibition. A. A. E. P. (Timaru.)
