MR EDWARD NEWMAN.

LANDS COMMITTEE’S TRIBUTE

In a special report to the House of Representatives on Saturday, the Lands Committee, of which Mr E. Newman (Manawatn) has been cjuiirman, referred to the impending retirement of My Newman from politics. “The Committee,” said the report “desire to place on record its high appreciation of the splendid services rendered to the country by Mr Newman during the years that he has been a member of the House and its regret, that he will no longer occupy the position of chairman of the Lands Committee —a position in which lie has displayed outstanding knowledge, ability, and courtesy.” The Prime Minister referred appreciatively in the House of Representatives to the work of several members who will not. be candidates at the general election in December. “I nee d not tell the House'of the great services that have been rendered to the community by Air E. Newman, the retiring member for Manawatn,” said the Prime Minis - ter. He has always represented a country electorate, he lias always been thoroughly well acquainted with the requirements of the country, and he has, always watched closely over country interests. I feel sure that Ire. would have come back again if he had chosen to become a candidate.”
