FOXTON HARBOUR BOARD.

A meeting of the Foxton Harboiu Board was held at the Board’s ofyesterday morning. Present: /|pMessrs J. Linklater (chairman), W. E. Barber, W. Signal, Holben, and the secretary (Mr Roore). CORRESPONDENCE. From the Palmerston N. Chamber of Commerce, notifying that the chamber was circulating all local bodies interested in the question ’of shipping to .he port asking if they are willing r.o contribute towards the expense which it may incur in securing increased shipping through the port.—The Board expressed approval and promised to support the proposal. From Public Trusiee asking for information re salary to rhe late secretary and treasurer. —Decided to inform the Trustee that the late treasurer’s position was an honorary one and carried no remuneration. From the Flaxmillers Association, expressing sympathy with the ' Board’s efforts to secure shipping to the port, and promising co-opera tion if the Board will indicate means of service.—Resolved to thank the Association and to communicate further on the subject when the question of shipping is under regview. An offer was received from a lo«c’al firm for a five years’ lease of the shed on the wharf at 3ft/- per week, with the right, of renewal for a further term at an increased rental of 15 per cent. —Aster discussion it was decided to invite public tenders for the lease of the shed. ACCESS TO WHARF. In reply to the Board’s further representations re right of access to the wharf, the Minister for Railways advised that he is arranging with the General Manager of Railways to visit Foxton and to look into the matter personally.—Messrs Barber and Signal were deputed to wait on the General Manager and 1o dismiss freights and other details with him. From Messrs E. Porter and Co.. Auckland, asking for information re depth of water on liar and towage facilities for the ketch “Rim.” facilities for the ketch “Rirn.” ": — Secretary’s reply to the effect that the ketch could negotiate the bar. etc., was endorsed. From the Anchor Shipping Coystating that it cannot see its way to place a steamer on flic Foxton trade.—Received. ANTICIPATING A LEASE. Messrs Schioler and Law, of Palerslon asked permission to erect a house, which they intended to re'liiove from Palmerston North to a section not yet surveyed, near the (lag staff in anticipation of a lease of same. —Permission granted witliout prejudice to any action that (lie Board may take. SAFE. The Public Trustee claimed a safe used by the Board as the property of the late Mr Book. —Decided to make an offer for the purchase of same. THE DREDGE. Messrs Barber.and Signal reported having inspected the dredge and instructed the winches to lie shifted amidships. In this connection the railway crane was used by permission of the local station master. The dredge employees were authorised to purchase material for effecting repairs when required. BOARD OFFICE. The location of the Board office as arranged by the chairman and secretary was endorsed and the charge favourably commented upon. AUSTRALIAN SCOW. A enble was received from Messrs BroSd Ltd., Sydney, staling that they anticipated sending a scow to fJL Foxton drawing 7 ft. of water and without a tug and asking if it■ _would be safe. —The secretary’s action in replying that it. would he safe was endorsed. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting lo £4O 8s OJd were passed for payment. VISIT OF INSPECTION. The secretary reported that. CapLain Munro and Air Millward. of (lie Canterbury Shipping Co., paid a. visit of inspection to the local port on the 19th inst. In conversation with the secretary, after (lie inspection, Captain Munro said the port was as good to-day as it was thirty years ago, although he noticed that the entrance was more to the south than it was when lie.traded here, in the early days. “If you —■ give us the water on the bar,”' he said,” we will give you the ships.” He said that 9ft on the liar was required to make it a workable proposition. He thought this could he obtained by the expenditure of a certain sum by the Board. He added that the port had a good future before it. He asked for a plan of ~ the river and soundings. —Decided to forward them at a later date. LEASES. The following leases were confirmed: Board to H. Osborne; do. to Robert Chaffey.
